2011

2011 is coming to a close and "we" at Love Lion have assembled our favorite albums, shows, and fellow labels of the year. We hope to offer quite a few more releases this coming year and, per request, repress the out of print cassette Lady of the Waterpark by Angel Olsen. Also, look for the score to the German film Anni by Woodpecker Wooliams coming early in 2012. Both masterfully ambient and rewarding, this lengthy two-track burner has been engaging us since we heard it  this fall and we cannot wait until you do as well. After those two projects mark metal's return to Love Lion with a brutal offering from Montreal's To the Cliffs.

Now, if we had to pick a favorite of these favorites, Clams Casino's EP Rainforest muddled the electronic-dance music genre which we enjoyed greatly and Deathspell Omega's - Diabolus Absconditus/Mass Grave Aesthetics, albeit not new music, was the most complex metal on LP. The live performance that will stick with us for years to come is the stunning Steve Reich piece Music For 18 Musicians as performed by Eighth Blackbird and Third Coast Percussion live at Millennium Park. ... ughh, Stevie Nicks, too!

As always, thanks to our friends, artists and purveyors of fine music everywhere for keeping the music world interesting, pleasantly exhausting, and beautiful.

Best,
Love Lion

RIP Purple Rhinestone Eagle

In the words of Purple Rhinestone Eagle...

"Dear friends & fans, after 6 years of shows, tours, and recordings we have decided to go our separate ways. We know this may come as a big shock to many of you but the time has come for the three of us to begin and fulfill other projects, commitments and life adventures. We are absolutely grateful for all the support you have given us over the years. We will never forget the love our fans have shown us. We wish that we could continue on but alas it shall not be. Thank you for everything. ♥ PRE"

We are as bummed as you are! Bye, Bootsie LaNasty.

New Geffika split LP with Skimask

Geffika / Skimask Split LP (Sophomore Lounge)

Geffika side, Oh hey, "Houdini," "Killing Technology," and "Pussy Whipped" fans you will like this band. This second offering by Chicago duo, Geffika, is another tutorial in the mud, mire, and ooze of heavy music. L.A. natives, Jessica Calvanico and Geoff Thais, have assembled these lengthy tracks in their practice den (tea room) and help spread their sludgy gospel with help from Skimask.
--
Skimask, the sludge continues but only as a base coat to the extreme fuzz and energy that makes up this Boston group's sound. Not unlike Load Records artists, Skimask pummel you with their songs and make no bones about it. Electronic textures mingle in between the squall of live drums, guitar and gritty (yet provocative) vocals making for a enjoyable (yet hung over) experience.

Limited to 200 hand-numbered copies with silk-screened sleeves on Sophomore Lounge (Wishgift, Geffika, Fielded, Animal City, Slow Horse).

News from across the pond states Love Lion will be working with an artist by the name of Woodpecker Wooliams. We are excited to share her brand of haunting, ambient folk music that is not unlike Liz Harris (aka Grouper), Joanna Newsom, or the shimmering dronewerks of Fennesz, Stars of the Lid, and Daniel Menche. For this planned release, WW is hoping to branch out and discover new soil to turn in hopes of a fruitful new sound.

Allow for a deep cleanse in the steam and reverb of the side long burner on her My Dance the Skull release, Sleeping Under Dark Suns. I hope you're as excited about this as we are. More details to follow...

Love,
Love Lion
